Welcome to my blog, Beauty and the Mess! My name is Shannon Hawkins, and I am an expert day dreamer, a professional librarian, and a growing Christian.
I first created this blog back in 2014 because, well, I had recently received an English degree and needed something to get my creative juices flowing. Back then, I didn’t know what direction my blog would go, and I selected the blog title “Beauty and the Mess” in the hope that it would remain relevant to the blog’s content. Lucky for me, the blog has lived up to its name. Throughout the years, I have discussed some of the messy issues that come with living, but I also try to highlight life’s everyday beauties.
My life experiences and personality influence the content of my posts, so I’d like to tell you all about what influences my life. I was born to the open skies and fields of western Oklahoma, and that’s where I am still. Growing up in a family of ten children has made life interesting. Though I had to endure a lot of teasing from older siblings, we still had our fair share of imaginative adventures, and I wouldn’t trade them for anything.
As an introvert, it’s no surprise that I took refuge in books at an early age. From the moment I could read, my life’s ambition was to become an author and illustrator, a dream which still lingers in the back of my heart. In the end, however, I acted more practically and became a librarian, where I still get to work with books. So, as you might expect, book talk takes up a lot of space on this blog (*note the subtitle of my blog: the ups and down in fiction and reality*). From middle school onward, my reading habits have tended toward British classics (i.e. Jane Austen) and other more nerdy classics (i.e. Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia), so…fair warning.
Lastly, my Christian walk has influenced my blog more and more lately. I became a Christian at the age of 14. Even though it’s been over a decade since then, I am far from finished growing in my Christian walk and am learning lessons all the time. Some of these lessons have been taught with the help of other Christ-focused bloggers. As they have blessed me, I hope to pass on the blessing to you!
